From Kitchen to Market celebrates newcomer women in food, June 16
Fare from Mexico, Egypt, Syria, India, Colombia, and Iran will be featured in Flavours of Hope’s Dream Cuisines event
TRADITIONAL EGYPTIAN BAKING, Mexican breads, Indian cinnamon buns, and Yucatan dishes—all made by immigrant and refugee women who are new to Canada—are just some of the foods that will be found at From Kitchen to Market: Newcomer Women Food Business Launch Celebration.
Taking place June 16 from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm at Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House, the celebratory event is an initiative of Flavours of Hope. The non-profit organization runs a program called Dream Cuisines, which helps newcomer women develop and launch culinary ventures in Vancouver.
The gathering will feature live music and storytelling, plus a chance to meet the makers behind several new food businesses, whose goods will be on sale.
The 2023 cohort includes Colombian Antojitos, meaning street food; traditional baking from Egyptian Bites; Elaichi Patisserie, which is already becoming known for its pistachio saffron “kulfi” cake (pictured at top); Damaskino Pastry; and Sabor a Yucatán.
Alumni businesses that will be participating are Mis Cazuelas Mexican Food, Tinkerbake, Super Dishes Egyptian Halal Cuisine, Rose Royal Persian Bakery, and Super Awesome Eats (which makes sourdough cinnamon buns in flavours like mango with cardamom and saffron, masala chai, and coconut tamarind).
Dream Cuisines is a nine-month immersive program aimed at addressing systemic barriers in the food industry, providing women with access to educational workshops, peer knowledge sharing, commissary kitchen space, sales channels, and more. It not only helps women get become self-sustaining entrepreneurs, but also provides a circle of friendship and support to participants through cooking, storytelling, and community building.
Tickets to the event are by donation, with proceeds supporting Dream Cuisines: Newcomer Women Food Business Program. See here for more info.
