The Massey Theatre Society hosts Eighth & Eighth Creative Spaces open house (735 Eighth Avenue, New Westminster) on November 6 from 1 to 5:30 pm.

NEW WESTMINSTER IS home to brand new arts and community spaces that officially open to the public on November 6.

Eighth & Eighth Creative Spaces is the transitional name for the newly expanded and enhanced arts and community spaces surrounding the Massey Theatre, which was established in 1949. The hub consists of more than 35,000 square feet of repurposed space including the Massey Theatre, Plaskett Gallery, multipurpose and digital studios, and more.

Throughout the afternoon of November 6, performances, demonstrations, and other activities will be taking place in the theatre, gallery, studios, labs, hallways, and beyond.

Jamaican-Canadian Ceildh Munroe will be mounting an installation called Fruition, which explores Caribbean identity and history, through fruit.

Ronnie Dean Harris, aka Ostwelve, will be doing a live mural painting. The Stō:lo/St’át'imc/Nlaka'pamux multimedia artist, who is based in New West, is the Massey Theatre’s Indigenous cultural director.

Cassius Khan and Amika Kushwaha will perform, the two being the founders and directors of Mushtari Begum Festival of Indian Classical Music and Dance, while rotating films by groups such as Turning Point Ensemble and N’we Jinan artists will be on view.

New Westminster Poet Laureate Elliot Slinn, DJ Kookum, Uzume Taiko, actor Allan Morgan, zheng artist Dai-Lin Hsieh, and dance collective Immigrant Lessons are among the other artists taking part.

“Years of hard work by local and provincial governments and Massey Theatre Society have brought us to this day. Now its time to engage community members, artists, and activators as the space is opened to the public so the potential of this important community space can be imagined together,” Jessica Schneider, executive director of the Massey Theatre Society said in a release.
