VIVA Alliance’s Plasticity exhibition explores change and reinvention, September 9 to 16
The fourth edition of the annual juried exhibition features works in a variety of media by 17 artists at the Roundhouse Arts and Recreation Centre

NO MATTER THEIR medium of choice, all artists rely on plasticity—the capacity of their materials to be shaped through their processes and formed into something new. Our brains and nervous systems are plastic too, our neural pathways and synapses continuously altered in response to experience.
VIVA Alliance’s fourth annual juried art exhibition is titled Plasticity, and the selected artists have engaged with this theme through experimenting with various materials in their image-making, installation, sound, video, performance, digital media, or interdisciplinary practice.
This is a particularly timely theme, as the VIVA Alliance’s website suggests:
In a contemporary moment shaped by acceleration, displacement, environmental change, self-optimization, and constant reinvention, Plasticity offers a counterpoint to purely celebratory understandings of flexibility and adaptation, reflecting on how we navigate the pressures of existing in a state of continuous formation.
Several public events are scheduled to take place during the exhibition, which includes works by 17 artists. Everything kicks off with an opening reception at the Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Centre on September 9, from 6 to 9 pm.
On September 12 at 3 pm, VIVA Alliance director Shadi Shadbahr and writer Bahar Mohazabnia will moderate a conversation with artists Golriz Rezvani, Jason Stovall, and Nicolas Latulippe.
On September 13 at 1 pm, artist Anna Ugolkova will perform, and this is followed by a virtual artist talk by Katya Anderson on September 14 at 6 pm.
