RESIST! brings together works by Rawan Hassan روان حسن, Gord Hill, Laurence Hyde, and Elizabeth MacKenzie, artists whose works educate and inspire significant social change. This exhibition is on at the Burnaby Art Gallery from September 11 to November 15.
Since its inception, the print medium has been used to disseminate information, from early newspapers to books and zines. RESIST! considers an artist’s role in recording and responding to the world around them.
Hyde’s wordless novel Southern Cross, a rare work from 1951, shows the devastation caused by nuclear testing. Elsewhere, Hill’s widely renowned The 500 Years of Resistance Comic Book captures significant historical and contemporary scenes.
Palestinian artist Hassan’s اغلى من كنز dearer than a treasure اغلى من كن balances cultural preservation and futurism, while MacKenzie’s large-scale work Cleave includes hundreds of intimate drawings that document the act of witnessing genocide in Gaza.
