SUMMER WON’T HIT this part of the world for a couple of months, but music fans can get an early taste of it with a band whose live show Time Out New York described as “a sweat-inducing live experience that only gets hotter as the night goes on”.

Hailing from Lima, Peru, the eight-member band Novalima blends traditional Afro-Peruvian rhythms with electronic, dub, reggae, salsa, and global beats.

Novalima’s six albums have received wide attention—and a Latin Grammy nomination—but the band is renowned for its incendiary live performances. Over more than two decades, Novalima has brought its unique hybrid sound to venues ranging from small clubs to major festival stages worldwide.

Joining them on the Rickshaw stage is Vancouver’s own Empanadas Ilegales, which will also bring its own spicy mixture—think psychedelic cumbia and salsa with influences from tropical and Andean traditions—to the Vancouver Folk Music Festival this July.
