THE VANCOUVER INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL says it’s added 20 percent more screenings and two new venues for 2025—the Arts Club Theatre’s Granville Island Stage and Alliance Française.
The news came as it released a few early teasers about what it will screen as part of its 44th annual event, October 2 to 12.
The first unveiled features include Canadian premieres of What Does That Nature Say to You, the story of a daughter introducing her free-spirited poet boyfriend to her family, by South Korean auteur Hong Sang-soo; and Dracula, an absurdist, Transylvania-shot, AI-assisted portrait of Vlad the Impaler’s return, by Romanian director Radu Jude. The festival will also showcase Miroirs No. 3, a psychodrama in which a woman who survives a traumatic car crash moves in with the woman who witnessed the accident, by German master Christian Petzold.
Elsewhere, three of the top award-winners from Berlin and Sundance take to VIFF screens: The Blue Trail (directed by Gabriel Mascaro, and recipient of the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize at Berlinale), If I Had Legs I’d Kick You (by Mary Bronstein, and winner of the Silver Bear for best leading performance at Berlinale), and Seeds (directed by Brittany Shyne, and winner of the U.S. Grand Jury Prize: Documentary at Sundance).
In today’s announcement, VIFF director of programming Curtis Woloschuk hinted that this year’s fest will have a wide selection from South America, a greater focus on documentary and nonfiction films, and a special showcase of Korean cinema. The fest is also working to expand its creative development and industry programs for filmmakers, under the direction of newcomer Ana Belén Asfura.
This year’s Artist & Industry Program features music executive Lisa Azille of Netflix Animation’s KPop Demon Hunters; Monstercat president Daniel Turcotte; and production executive and musician Tammy Glover of Sony Pictures TV.
Registration for the Artist & Industry Pass opens on August 8.
The rest of the VIFF programming will be announced on August 27, with VIFF+ Members getting early single-ticket access the same day at noon, and general sales opening to the public on August 28. ![]()
