ALEXANDER HAMILTON (1755/7 to 1804), who went from an impoverished childhood to becoming one of America’s founding fathers, is today featured on the US$10 bill—and is the subject of the biggest musical of the century.

Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton, which features a groundbreaking score blending hip-hop, jazz, and R&B, has been Broadway’s number one smash hit since its 2015 release. Based on Ron Chernow’s acclaimed biography, the production has won multiple Tony, Grammy, and Olivier Awards; the Pulitzer Prize for Drama; and an unprecedented special citation from the Kennedy Center Honors. The Hamilton Original Broadway Cast Recording earned a 2016 Grammy for Best Musical Theatre Album.

While America’s founding fathers, including Hamilton, were all white (many of whom owned Black slaves), people of colour play all of Hamilton’s leading roles.

"This is a story about America then, told by America now, and we want to eliminate any distance,” Miranda told The New York Times. “Our story should look the way our country looks. Then we found the best people to embody these parts. I think it’s a very powerful statement without having to be a statement.”

Hamilton features direction by Thomas Kail, choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler, musical supervision and orchestrations by Alex Lacamoire, scenic design by David Korins, costume design by Paul Tazewell, lighting design by Howell Binkley, sound design by Nevin Steinberg, and hair and wig design by Charles G. LaPointe.

Jeffrey Seller and Broadway Across Canada have announced a weekly digital lottery for Hamilton tickets, with a limited number of seats available for every performance for $10 each. The lottery begins each Friday and closes the following Thursday for the upcoming week’s performances.
