THE TD VANCOUVER International Jazz Festival has just announced two big names coming to town for the 2022 event: Cécile McLorin Salvant and GoGo Penguin.

Since winning the Thelonious Monk competition in 2010, vocalist McLorin Salvant has been blazing trails in jazz and art music, earning multiple Grammys and a MacArthur Fellowship and issuing five critically acclaimed releases.

McLorin Salvant’s newest release and Nonesuch debut, Ghost Song, takes the artist to a new level, the cyclical immersive suite of songs populated by distinct spiritual characters.

McLorin Salvant performs at 7 pm on June 27 at the Vancouver Playhouse.

Pianist Chris Illingworth, bassist Nick Blacka, and drummer Jon Scott make up Manchester-based Blue Note recording artists GoGo Penguin, known for their electrifying live performances. Their skittering break-beats, powerful sub-bass, telepathic interplay, and penchant for anthemic melody “recall the intricacy of Aphex Twin or Four Tet”, according to The 4O5.

The Guardian had this to say about the group: “Jazz, techno, hip-hop and dubstep are glimpsed here, but for all the looping motifs and dance floor vibes, this is the work of three sure-footed improvisers with deep jazz roots.”

GoGo Penguin performs at 7 pm on June 28 at the Vancouver Playhouse.

Presale tickets for Cécile McLorin Salvant and GoGo Penguin for festival donors are available for both shows starting April 12 at 10 am, and general public tickets go on sale on April 14 at 10 am at www.coastaljazz.ca.

“Stay tuned over the coming weeks for more exciting shows,” Jazz Fest executive director Nina Horvath said in a release. “We’ve booked over 140 performances for the TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival, and are looking forward to bringing the festival back to in-person events after the past two years of COVID-19 event cancellations and programming changes.”

The 2022 Jazz Fest runs June 24 to July 3.
