The lowdown

Don’t let the coming of the school year get you down: Shipyards Live is bringing summer to a raucous close with its September 2 event.

Hitting the stage at Shipbuilders Square are the Shenanigans, which you might have caught over the past decade at the Blarney Stone, and Lambsreath, a local act fronted by Mark Lingelbach that focuses on alternative jazz, rock, and pop.

The family-friendly outdoor extravaganza runs from 3 to 10 p.m. and features the Patio pop-up beer garden presented by Stanley Park Brewing (with happy hour from 3 to 5 pm meaning $1 off all Stanley Park beers); Food Truck Lane presented by The Streetfood Vancouver Society; and Shipyards Marketplace, where local artisan vendors offer up all kinds of cool wares.

It all takes place against a stunning backdrop of Vancouver Harbour and the city skyline, not far from The Polygon Gallery and SeaBus terminal.

The pairing

While you’ll be able to get your fill of street food at Shipyards Live, maybe save it for dinner and head into the event energized with a pre-show afternoon stop at nearby 49th Parallel Coffee Roasters & Lucky’s Doughnuts. The Lower Lonsdale outpost (93 Lonsdale) is the group’s first location on the North Shore.

Doughnuts came into the picture at the café over a decade ago, when its chef at the time, who happened to be a former Canadian barista champion, loved the idea of marrying two of his favourite things. These aren’t your everyday doughnuts: everything is made from scratch, including jams, fillings, and toppings. Each café has its own full baking kitchen, so everything in the glass display cases has been made that morning by dedicated pastry chefs.

Old Fashioneds are an ever-popular cake doughnut that come in flavours like vanilla, chocolate, salted-caramel, and cinnamon sugar; then there’s Fruits ’n’ Florals, dipped in blueberry and lavender glaze with strawberry icing drizzle then topped with freeze-dried blueberries and dried rose petals. Peanut butter and jelly is a classic yeast-dough square that’s filled in all four corners, meaning everyone gets a mouthful of the good stuff if you happen to be sharing. Look for seasonal varieties like strawberry rhubarb Berliner and mango passionfruit Bismarck; vegan-friendly options like a sprinkled ring; apple-bacon fritters; and more.

The team sources coffee beans directly from farmers, ensuring fair trade for its “crop to cup” offerings. Head to the website and meet people like Carlos Guamanga, a coffee grower from Huila, Colombia; Luis Pedro Zelaya, who farms in Antigua, Guatemala; and Natividad Benitez, who has a coffee farm in Santa Barbara, Honduras.
