The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain is making its much-anticipated return to the Vancouver Recital Society with a concert at the Orpheum on May 3 at 3 pm.
Back by popular demand after an epic show here in 2023, this world-renowned troupe of all-singing, all-strumming ukulele players is performing hilarious and astonishing interpretations of film scores, rock ’n’ roll, pop, jazz, blues, and classical music.
The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain is a live show, a musical and entertainment team, a company, and a brand which has successfully and independently put on live performances for 40 years. Tours have taken the musicians across the U.K., the U.S., Europe, Asia, Australasia, and beyond. Notable gigs include headlining and selling out at the Royal Albert Hall, Sydney Opera House, Carnegie Hall, the Vienna Opera House, Glastonbury Festival, WOMAD, Windsor Castle, Buckingham Palace, the Barbican Centre, and many more significant venues around the world.
Reviewers often note that the orchestra’s concerts are virtuosic, amusing, entertaining, witty, quirky, and irreverent. The performers use only acoustic ukuleles and their voices. Without any electronic effects, they manage to achieve a hard-rocking sound when playing pop music, and a sensitive, nuanced sound when playing classically rooted pieces.
The group is hailed as the world’s first ukulele orchestra, which started the fashion for ukulele ensembles and orchestras. It has also been an inspiration for the social groups revolving around the instrument that have proliferated in many countries since 1985, the year the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain was founded. Its current lineup consists of Peter Brooke Turner, Ben Hales, Ben Rouse, Leisa Rea, Guy Hargreaves, Laura Currie, and Laurie Higgins.
Buckle up for a helter-skelter ride through every kind of musical genre with plenty of laughs along the way. From ABBA to ZZ Top, Tchaikovsky to Nirvana, and bluegrass tunes to Broadway hits, there is something for everyone on this unique program, which will be announced from the stage during the show. There will be a 20-minute intermission.
This is feel-good music at its best, and reserving seats early is recommended. Tickets and more details are available through the Vancouver Recital Society.
