By lantern light, Alex Mah goes looking for home. birdcage, his new interdisciplinary meditation on identity and migration, opens at EDAM from September 3 to 5, kicking off Pi Theatre’s 2026–27 season.

birdcage explores the hope, longing, and confusion of Mah’s mixed-race, immigrant identity through an introspective multimedia performance. Combining poetry, new music, lanterns, soundscape, and improvisational performance techniques, Mah’s latest piece is sure to provoke contemplation.

Mah is a Vancouver-based interdisciplinary artist, composer, musician, and dancer who has participated in festivals, workshops, and performances across Canada, Germany, and the U.K. He created birdcage in collaboration with violinist Ilana Waniuk over a two-year period. The creative team for the production includes movement consultant and outside eye Natalie Gan, costume designer elika mojtabaei, lighting designer Jonathan Kim, technical director Gillian Hanemayer, and stage manager Agnes Hui.

This presentation is part of the Pi Provocateurs performing arts series. Tickets to birdcage are available here.
