Alliance Française Vancouver presents Un Barrage contre le Pacifique, a play by Maud Andrieux, on March 21 at 7:30 pm.

Adapted from Marguerite Duras’s novel, this play follows a French mother in 1930s Indochina as she fights to protect her crops from the encroaching waters. It’s a story of resistance against injustice—but it’s also a powerful call to action, and a reminder for folks to chase their dreams.

Andrieux discovered the writings of Duras upon returning from a first trip to Vietnam in 2003; the late French novelist’s simple, repetitive, and cinematographic style made Andrieux want to adapt her 400-page novel into a one-woman show. She played Suzanne in Un barrage contre le Pacifique in 2004, then began an international career performing the play in France, Southeast Asia, Turkey, and Morocco. She has now been adapting, directing, and performing Duras’s novels for nearly two decades.

The play is in French with English surtitles. For tickets and more details, visit Alliance Française Vancouver.
