BC Achievement Foundation has unveiled the winners of this year’s Sam Carter Award in Applied Art + Design. Presented annually, the award program honours British Columbians who excel in creating functional art and design, advancing the dialogue on its importance in people’s lives.
Recipients will be celebrated at a ticketed award ceremony and exhibition reception on November 25 from 5:30 pm to 8 pm, at the Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Centre. The evening will feature two short films highlighting each recipient’s creative accomplishments and will be amplified through the online campaign #shinethelightbc. Tickets can be purchased online.
The 2025 recipients are Bettina Mueller Reichl and Mario Pao, who are both based in Vancouver. The title of Judson Beaumont Emerging Artist goes to Vancouver’s Tyler James Goin, while the Award of Distinction goes to Bowen Island’s Russell Hackney.

This year’s recipients were selected by an independent jury of past awardees and accomplished First Nations artists, including Lisa Hageman Yahgulanaas (Haida), Thomas Cannell (Musqueam), and James Harry (Squamish). The jury also featured Trish Kelly, president of Emily Carr University of Art + Design; Anicka Quin, editor-in-chief of Western Living magazine; and Jeff Martin of Jeff Martin Joinery. Advisors to the jury were craft advocate Ron Kong and Toby Barratt of Propellor Design.
Now in its 21st year, the Sam Carter Award in Applied Art + Design showcases inspiring examples of functional art that enhance everyday life while contributing to the province’s creative economy. Awardees represent exceptional achievements across a variety of disciplines, including furniture, textiles, jewellery, ceramics, glass, fashion, and industrial design.
