The new book A Monumental Practice by 7IDANsuu James Hart and Curtis Collins marks the first publication devoted to Haida artist and hereditary chief Hart. It is both a survey of his major career achievements and a document of an impossible-to-assemble exhibition.

Hart has garnered international acclaim for his towering poles, stately cedar sculptures, and massive bronzes—monumental works that extend the long continuum of Haida visual traditions into powerful new forms.

Published in collaboration with the Audain Art Museum, A Monumental Practice features a foreword by Michael Audain and texts by Wade Davis and Gwaliga Hart, while hundreds of photos show 19 of Hart’s monumental works and associated smaller carvings and bronzes scattered across North America and Europe. Collins draws on over two years of interviews with the artist to illustrate how key animal and supernatural figures reappear across scales and mediums, from jewellery to 60-foot poles.
