The PRISMA Festival is returning to Powell River from June 15 to 27, bringing stellar classical music, emerging talent, and vibrant community celebrations to the qathet region.
Each summer, PRISMA welcomes more than 5,000 audience members from B.C. and beyond for an exciting lineup of symphony concerts, chamber music, educational programming, and special events. At the heart of it is the PRISMA Festival Orchestra, performing major symphonic repertoire under the direction of acclaimed conductor Arthur Arnold. A faculty composed of international guest artists—many drawn from leading orchestras around the world—join students in powerful collaborations that make each performance unique.
The 14th annual festival is officially launching with the Gala Grand Opening at the Evergreen Theatre on June 18 at 7:30 pm. The evening features guest chamber ensembles alongside the student orchestra, performing works by Tobin Stokes, John Estacio, Jean Françaix, Stockhausen, and Vivaldi.

Among the highlights throughout PRISMA is the Week One Symphony Concert at the Evergreen Theatre on June 19 at 7:30 pm. It features Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique as well as Brahms’ Double Concerto in A minor, Op. 102 with violinist Gwen Hoebig and cellist Desmond Hoebig—who are siblings—as soloists. On June 20 at 1:30 pm, Sail to the Symphony Matinée offers a daytime reprise of the same program, with a buffet lunch available for purchase.
On June 24, the VSO School of Music’s Sinfonietta String Ensemble is playing a concert. There’s also a vibrant Chamber Music Concert with guest artists on June 25, and a Week Two Symphony Concert on June 26 featuring Holst’s orchestral masterpiece The Planets.

The festival concludes with PRISMA on the Beach, a waterfront celebration featuring live orchestral music, at Willingdon Beach Park on June 27. This free community gathering draws over 2,500 spectators. Tla’amin singers and drummers Drew Blaney and Cyndi Pallen are performing alongside the PRISMA Festival Orchestra.
In all, the festival includes nearly 50 events, from masterclasses and recitals to open rehearsals and community performances. Visit the PRISMA website to purchase tickets and passes, explore a full schedule, and learn how to give to the Musical Merit Fund for deserving students.
