The Cinematheque hosts Love, Sex, Religion, Death: The Complete Films of Terence Davies, May 21 to June 28
Retrospective unites the late British filmmaker’s feature-length works, including A Quiet Passion and Distant Voices, Still Lives
Distant Voices, Still Lives
Few filmmakers have been as detailed in their approach to time, mortality, and the predictive powers of cinema as Terence Davies.
Born in 1945 to a working-class family in Liverpool, Davies came to filmmaking relatively late after a decade of employment as a clerk and accountant. His first feature, 1988’s Distant Voices, Still Lives, was a sudden success, winning awards at Locarno and Cannes. Davies died in 2023, leaving behind a filmography with multiple masterpieces.
Love, Sex, Religion, Death: The Complete Films of Terence Davies gathers together the director’s feature-length works in all their economy and grandeur. This retrospective, the first in Vancouver, follows a tour stop at TIFF Cinematheque and an initial mounting at the BFI in London. It includes a video introduction from acclaimed German cinematographer Florian Hoffmeister, who shot both 2011’s The Deep Blue Sea and 2016’s A Quiet Passion.
