The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra presents Brahms & Tchaikovsky 5 at the Orpheum on February 13 and 14 at 7:30 pm, as part of the Edward Jones Masterworks Gold series.
Gil Shaham, one of the world’s foremost violinists, rises to the challenge of Brahms’s only Violin Concerto, famously called “unplayable” due to its reckless speed and agility. Continuing on a daring note, conductor Han-Na Chang leads Tchaikovsky’s magnificent Symphony No. 5 in E minor, Op. 64. Rounding out the program is Canadian composer Ian Cusson’s tone poem A Child’s Bright Eyes, inspired by the work of late East Van poet Zaccheus Jackson.
A free prelude concert with the VSO School of Music Chamber ensemble takes place on February 14 at 6:45 pm in the Orpheum’s Westcoast Energy Hall. Shaham is also hosting a violin masterclass at Pyatt Hall on February 12 at 5 pm.
Tickets and more details are available through the VSO.
