This spring, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra returns to the Orpheum with a program that invites audiences to hear images as much as music. Under the direction of Peter Oundjian, Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition unfolds as a sequence of vivid scenes, shifting from intimate to monumental with striking immediacy.

Performances take place May 15 at 7 pm as part of the Musically Speaking series, and May 17 at 2 pm as part of the Symphony Sundays series.

The program opens with Joan Tower’s Concerto for Orchestra, a work that brings individual sections of the ensemble into sharp focus. It is followed by Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 1, performed by Macedonian pianist Simon Trpčeski, whose playing combines precision with a strong sense of momentum and colour.

On May 14 at 5 pm, Trpčeski will also lead a piano masterclass at Pyatt Hall, offering audiences a chance to observe his work with advanced students.

Tickets to Pictures At An Exhibition are available through the VSO.
