Join the Vancouver Writers Fest at Oh, Canada!: The Alma Lee Opening Night Event, presented in partnership with Stir, to hear some of the country’s most influential thinkers take on the biggest questions Canada is currently facing. In sequential talks, notable Canadian authors will illuminate how they see the nation and how we can commit to planning for a better future.

The past year has brought new focus to what it means to be Canadian. Some boldly wave the flag, while others feel uneasy about showing affection for a place with a legacy of colonization. As complicated as these relationships to the land may be, it’s become increasingly vital to protect the best parts of Canada—especially those that differentiate it from its neighbours to the south. With people’s values, livelihoods, and sovereignty at risk, it’s more important than ever to consider solutions.

Oh, Canada!: The Alma Lee Opening Night Event will take place at the Vancouver Playhouse on October 20 at 7:30 pm. Hosted by Elamin Abdelmahmoud, the evening will feature Bob Joseph, Kate Beaton, Linden MacIntyre, Emma Donoghue, Canisia Lubrin, David Moscrop, Brent Butt, and Jack Wang.

The 38th annual Vancouver Writers Fest will run from October 20 to 26 at various venues, featuring a scintillating lineup of over 130 local and international authors, in 87 events that will spark empathy, action, and transformation.

This year’s festival program will explore the issues and themes dominating the cultural and political sphere, and open the door to wider understanding. It will dig deep into what it means to be Canadian, and examine our role in a rapidly shifting geopolitical landscape. Most of all, it will offer readers of all ages an opportunity to hear from some of the finest authors working today, and discover new books from every genre that deserve a place on the shelf.

Among the other offerings in store is Ahead By A Century: Lyrics Night, a fan-favourite event featuring dramatic readings of song lyrics by Canadian artists, at Performance Works on October 24 at 8 pm.

Purchase tickets and discover the full lineup through the Vancouver Writers Fest.
