Stellar local musicians play seminal, sassy funk in North Shore Jazz presentation as part of Vancouver International Jazz Festival

Vancouver keyboardist Mary Ancheta has long been influenced by Betty Davis, a crucial voice of 1970s funk. Ancheta’s mini orchestra performs the flamboyant diva’s gritty, sexually charged, incredibly funky tunes on June 21 at 7:30 pm at the BlueShore at CapU.

Part of the eight-concert North Shore Jazz series presented with the Vancouver International Jazz Festival, this funk extravaganza is fronted by supreme vocalists Dawn Pemberton, Leo D.E. Johnson, and Krystle Dos Santos.

With her raw, earthy voice, Davis shook up the American soul scene in the early ’70s. As her husband Miles Davis once said: “She was Madonna before Madonna, Prince before Prince.” Betty introduced Miles to Jimi Hendrix and psychedelic rock, while he featured her on Filles de Kilimanjaro and produced some of her prime recordings.

For this performance, Ancheta’s MAQkestra draws mainly on Davis’s seminal albums They Say I’m Different and Nasty Gal.
