Ukrainian singer-songwriter Maryna Krut performs at BlueShore at CapU, January 23
Multifaceted young artist brings a modern sound to the 65-string bandura, Ukraine’s national instrument
Maryna Krut.
When Ukrainian singer-songwriter and bandura player Maryna Krut spoke to the Rolling Stone in 2023, she was worried it could have been her last interview due to nearby missile strikes. Thankfully, that was not that case—and now, the talented artist is bringing her unique music to Capilano University’s BlueShore Financial Centre for the Performing Arts on January 23 at 7:30 pm.
Born in western Ukraine, Krut started playing the bandura, the country’s national instrument (a 65-string cross between harp and guitar), at age eight. Her practice was first grounded in traditional music, but Krut says she began to rebel by age 15, exploring “a more modern, jazzy and funky way to play the instrument while mixing in pop vocals.”
Today, Krut is a multifaceted artist who performs a wide variety of styles. She is at the forefront of a revival of Ukrainian culture, and uses that culture as a tool of resistance in the confrontation with Russia.
Tickets are available at BlueShore at CapU.
