Chan Centre hosts the buoyant Afro-pop sound of Mariam of Amadou & Mariam, November 7
Moving tribute features music from the duo’s forthcoming album L’Amour à la Folie
Mariam of Amadou & Mariam
The Chan Centre for the Performing Arts presents Mariam of Amadou & Mariam, a tribute to the African power couple that rose to musical prominence over the course of four decades, on November 7 at 7:30 pm.
The Grammy-nominated couple met through Mali’s Institute for the Young Blind. Mariam had become blind by the age of five and Amadou when he was 16. The couple married in 1980 and began making music together as a duo. Eight albums later, they amassed a global following with their Afro-pop sound that blended Malian blues, hip-hop, disco, and rock, all riding atop their signature buoyant beats.
Amadou passed away in April, leaving behind Mariam and the duo’s upcoming unreleased album, L’Amour à la Folie. In this moving tribute to Amadou, Mariam will perform music from the album with her joyful, powerful voice, backed by her long-time band members.
