Early Music Vancouver is launching its 2026 Summer Festival with a bold, ambitious take on Claudio Monteverdi’s opera Orfeo. The fully staged production will be at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts on July 31 at 7:30 pm and August 2 at 2:30 pm.

When Orfeo’s beloved wife Euridice dies suddenly on their wedding night, he decides to journey deep into the underworld to bring her back, equipped only with the power of his music. With the 1607 premiere of Orfeo, Monteverdi revealed the true dramatic potential of opera, and the work remains one of the most powerful in the art form’s canon.

This production is directed by baroque performance expert Guillaume Bernardi and conducted by Pacific Baroque Orchestra director Alexander Weimann. It features a dozen singers onstage, an orchestra of rarely heard 17th-century instruments, and titular star Marc Mauillon’s incredible singing.

Tickets are available through Early Music Vancouver.
