Early Music Vancouver presents Quicksilver: The Early Moderns in concert at St. Andrew’s-Wesley United Church on March 21 at 7:30 pm.
Music had a cultural revolution in the 17th century: it suddenly became modern. This music of dramatic opposition and vivid emotions found its voice in a new form: the sonata, a pure instrumental work with no agenda but the imagination of the composer.
The Quicksilver Baroque Ensemble’s upcoming show is a celebration of this style, bringing to life the extravagant and sumptuous sonatas which were created first by virtuoso instrumental composers in Italy, and then taken up in Germany. Audiences will hear works by Dario Castello, Matthias Weckmann, and more.
Quicksilver features violinists Robert Mealy and Julie Andrijeski, dulcian player Dominic Teresi, viola da gamba player David Morris, guitarist and lutenist Charles Weaver, and harpsichordist and organist Avi Stein.
