Fast-rising Filipino-Canadian actor and singer-songwriter takes the titular role in a rendition set in a 1970s variety show

FILIPINO-CANADIAN ARTIST Argel Monte De Ramos is taking the lead in Metro Theatre’s disco-charged production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

A versatile performer and singer-songwriter, De Ramos got his start performing in his church choir. From there, he’s worked his way into musical theatre, with companies like Theatre Under the Stars and the Arts Club.

De Ramos was nominated for Pop Artist of the Year and received the Excellence Award by a BIPOC Artist at the Fraser Valley Music Awards. He is also a recent Top 10 Finalist in CBC Music’s Toyota Searchlight and performed at the City of Surrey’s JUNO Plaza Party this past March.

His Joseph will not only belt out famous hits like “Any Dream Will Do”, but will inhabit a setting that’s been changed from the original hit by by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. Rather than taking place in Biblical Egypt, Metro Theatre sets this rendition of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat in a 1970s TV soundstage as its locale.

Directed by Christopher King, with choreography by Shelley Stewart Hunt, and music direction by Jenaya Barker, the show follows The Narrator, who experiences a metamorphosis into a Cher-like variety-show host. Joseph then becomes a guest on the show. The production incorporates a 17-person cast, live band, choreography by Shelley Stewart Hunt and a Day-Glo flair.
