The Kay Meek Arts Centre presents Ian Parker and Kerson Leong on January 11 at 3 pm
IAN PARKER WAS BORN into a family of pianists—so it was only natural that he took an interest in the keys himself at age three, and has been playing ever since.
The Juilliard-trained musician has performed recitals throughout Canada, the U.S., and Europe, and has won grand prizes at the CBC National Radio Competition, the Canadian National Music Festival, and Montreal’s OSM Competition. He is now music director and principal conductor of the Vancouver Academy of Music Symphony Orchestra, and serves as artistic advisor on the Kay Meek Arts Centre’s board of directors.
He’ll be performing a matinee at the latter venue on January 11, alongside violinist Kerson Leong. The pair will play such pieces as César Franck’s Sonata in A major for Violin and Piano and Maurice Ravel’s rhapsodic Tzigane.
Leong, for his part, has been playing recitals to international acclaim since winning first prize at the Menuhin Competition in 2010. He has been an artist in residence at Montreal’s Orchestre Métropolitain and is currently an associate artist at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel in Belgium.
Celebrated trumpeter Jens Lindemann—who was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada in 2014, becoming the first classical brass soloist to achieve the honour—will join Parker and Leong during the concert to play Johannes Brahms’s Horn Trio in E-flat major.
Kay Meek executive director Melissa Duchak will host a pre-concert chat with the musicians, beginning at 2:15 pm. ![]()
