La tragédie de Carmen.
Nebula Performances presents its first full-scale production, La tragédie de Carmen, from August 28 to September 7. This gripping adaptation by Peter Brook condenses Bizet’s Carmen into a more focused and intense production, highlighting the work’s most powerful and dramatic elements.
Technical director Lynol Amero has transformed Nebula Hall, located in South Vancouver next to the Oak Street Bridge, into a dynamic theatrical venue. Set in a high school, La tragédie de Carmen speaks directly to a new generation while remaining accessible to audiences of all backgrounds.
Nebula Performances is directed and cofounded by industrial entrepreneur Alice Chee and artistic director Wenwen Du. Together, they have created a multi-purpose presentation space where musical growth and innovation can thrive. La tragédie de Carmen is being presented as part of The Chee Series, a program that prioritizes mentorship while empowering the next generation of artists to reach new heights.

Nebula Performances is dedicated to nurturing talent by providing a platform where both established and emerging artists can shine. Its mission is to foster a diverse and inclusive environment, strengthening connections within the local community and broader artistic network in Vancouver and across Canada. Since opening in 2024, the company has hosted a variety of performances, masterclasses, and workshops that promote opportunities for young musicians.

La tragédie de Carmen is set in a contemporary context designed for young audiences. The goal is to place Carmen within the framework of present-day social issues. This is a main priority for stage director David Walsh, who believes in the power of opera to transform hearts and minds.
Performances of La tragédie de Carmen are at 7:30 pm on August 28 and 30 and September 3 and 5. There is also a 2:30 pm show on September 7. Tickets are available here.
