The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra presents the B.C. premiere of Philip Glass’ Eleventh Symphony at the Orpheum on December 6 at 7 pm as part of the Musically Speaking Series.
From its majestic opening through to a shattering climax, Glass’ Symphony No. 11 is one of the 21st century’s greatest works. Accompanying the piece on the program is John Adams’ Gnarly Buttons featuring VSO principal clarinetist Jeanette Jonquil, and the world premiere of Linda Catlin Smith’s Mountain (commissioned with the support of the Hugh Davidson Fund).
This concert led by Otto Tausk also features the Canadian premiere of Steve Reich’s Jacob’s Ladder performed with U.K.-based group Synergy Vocals, a sweeping co-commission by the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra with the New York Philharmonic, BBC Radio 3, Fundação Casa da Música, Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra, O/Modernt’s Queen Silvia Concert Hall, and Radio France.
