Hailing from Ivory Coast, Dobet Gnahoré is a virtuosic singer, songwriter, percussionist, and dancer whose musical style blends Afro-funk and West African musical traditions. Gnahoré and her band will bring their danceable grooves, flowing beats, nimble electric-guitar lines, and melodic hooks to Capilano University’s BlueShore Financial Centre for the Performing Arts on May 11 at 7:30 pm.
Gnahoré was born into one of Ivory Coast’s most prestigious musical families. Her father, renowned percussionist Boni Gnahoré, rigorously trained her in music, dance, theatre, fashion, and poetry—art forms which serve as her foundation to this day.
Exploding with hope and positivity, Gnahoré’s new songs explore the concept of freedom: the freedom to blend the energy of modern Africa with its vibrant ancestral rhythms, and to use her words and image to empower a new generation of daring, strong, and independent African women.
Tickets are available through BlueShore at CapU.
