Cellist Elinor Frey leads Accademia de’ Dissonanti through melodic Boccheriniana, October 14

Early Music Vancouver presents Boccheriniana on October 14 at 7:30 pm at Christ Church Cathedral
LUIGI BOCCHERINI, A revered composer of the classical era, championed the cello. He played as a travelling virtuoso until settling in Madrid to work as a court composer, a rival to the likes of Mozart and Bach.
Elinor Frey similarly upholds and cherishes the same instrument. The Canadian-American cellist, who specializes in early and new music, holds degrees from McGill, Mannes, and Juilliard; she also teaches early cello at the University of Montréal, lectures at McGill University, and is a visiting fellow in music at Oxford University’s Lady Margaret Hall. A recipient of a US-Italy Fulbright Fellowship, Frey is the artistic director of Accademia de’ Dissonanti.
Building on its January 2020 tour, Boccheriniana, the ensemble will perform a second program of music dedicated to the beguiling music of Boccherini in concert in Vancouver as part of a tour that also includes stops in Toronto, Montréal, Victoria, Kénogami, Waterloo, and Salt Spring Island.
The program, presented here by Early Music Vancouver, brings Frey together with Accademia de’ Dissonanti string players Laura Andriani, Rossella Croce, and Isaac Chalk with celebrated traverso player Jan De Winne, a flute professor at the Paris and Brussels conservatories and celebrated flute maker.
Expect a pair of Boccherini’s flute quintets and a string trio as well as chamber music by Mozart and J.C. Bach and a string quartet by Maddalena Lombardini Sirmen, the best-known female composer of the genre.
