Saxophonist Chet Doxas brings innovation as performer and composer to CapU jazz ensembles, October 24

HE’S ONLY 44, but Montreal-born saxophonist Chet Doxas has already set down a long, storied career that seems rooted in another era. The son of a musician and recording engineer, Doxas cut his teeth as a teenager playing dances, burlesque reviews, and nightclubs around his hometown in the 1990s. He followed this with two degrees from McGill University’s vaunted jazz performance program, and by his early 20s his playing was prominent on the Academy Award–nominated soundtrack of the 2003 film Les Triplettes de Belleville.
By then, he’d shown an interest in composing, and in the years since he has fronted a slew of projects, among them the Doxas Brothers Quartet, featuring his drumming sibling Jim, with whom Chet has toured the world alongside such luminaries as Carla Bley, Oliver Jones, and Joe Lovano. His catalogue totals over a hundred recordings and 14 albums as leader or coleader, stretching from experimental jazz to ambient, electronics-drenched variations on the music of Hildegard von Bingen.
In the midst of all this, Doxas has also found time to teach. This facet will naturally come into play when he leads CapU jazz ensembles both big and small at the BlueShore at CapU on October 24, in a program that promises an inspiring glimpse into the future of the form. ![]()
