Gordon Grdina’s Ru’ya

Ru’ya—which means “foresight” in Arabic—is an ensemble that brings together diverse musical traditions. Led by Vancouver-based guitarist and oud player Gordon Grdina, the group features Ghalia Benali, an incredible Arabic singer from Tunisia, based in Belgium, along with American pianist Matt Mitchell, Turkish-American violinist Eylem Basaldi, Canadian percussionist Hamin Honari, and German drummer Christian Lillinger.

Ru’ya is the culmination of 20 years of musical exploration that started with Grdina’s debut album, Think Like the Waves. It led to a sound that examined the edges of tonality and included elements of Persian classical music and Arabic maqam.

This new project creates space for each of the incredible musicians to freely express themselves. Poetic texts are transformed into compositions, drawing on Benali’s idea of poets as the true chroniclers of human history and emotional truths.

Ru’ya will perform at the Christ Church Cathedral on November 4 at 7:30 pm, presented by BlueShore at CapU and New Old World Music Society.

Tickets are available here.
