The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra presents Ravel’s Piano Concertos at the Orpheum on November 14 and 15 at 7:30 pm, as part of the Edward Jones Masterworks Gold series.
Canadian pianist Louis Lortie returns to the city to showcase two works by the French Romantic composer Maurice Ravel—his Piano Concerto for the Left Hand and Piano Concerto in G major. Maestro Otto Tausk then takes audience members on an adventure into the fairytale world of Ravel’s Mother Goose (Ma mère l’Oye), inspired by classic stories like Beauty and the Beast, Sleeping Beauty, and more.
The program wraps up by highlighting the virtuosity of the VSO’s musicians with contemporary British composer George Benjamin’s tour-de-force Concerto for Orchestra; the piece is dedicated to the memory of another influential British composer, the late Oliver Knussen.
