The Firehall Arts Centre is launching its 2025-26 season with Vacant Lot by Nelson-based choreographer, director, and Screen Actors Guild Award–winning artist Hiromoto Ida from October 22 to 25.

Based on the contemporary Japanese play SARACHI by Shogo Ota, the dance-theatre production follows a long-married couple that visits the vacant lot where their house once stood. They innocently share memories of their house, kids, and life together, soon realizing how short this life is and that existence in the universe is fragile.

Lindsay Clague and Ida embody the married couple, telling the story through movement, dialogue, and at times, stillness. This work reveals the loneliness of human existence and people’s longing to connect to each other and to the universe.

While Vacant Lot’s overarching themes are existential, the production also celebrates the ordinary, undocumented moments in everyday life with vibrant humour.
