To the Moon: Mid-Autumn Celebration takes place at Gateway Theatre and Minoru Chapel on October 5 at 2 pm

DURING MID-AUTUMN FESTIVAL, a Chinese celebration that dates back more than 3,000 years, the full moon is symbolic of reunions. Families around the world gather to admire the night sky, light lanterns, give thanks, and indulge in delicious food like mooncakes—small round cakes with fillings that range from salted egg yolk to lotus-seed paste.

The moon is said to be the fullest and brightest on the 15th day of the eighth month in the lunar calendar; typically that’s late September or early October. This year, it falls on October 5, and Gateway Theatre is honouring the occasion with an afternoon family event called To the Moon: Mid-Autumn Celebration.

At the Chapel at Minoru Park located just next to the theatre, Filipinx mezzo-soprano Renee Fajardo will sing a program of Disney faves, Broadway hits, and other memorable movie-musical tunes, ranging from Frozen’s “Let It Go” to “Golden” from the just-released animated musical KPop Demon Hunters. Following the concert, families will make their way back to the theatre to partake in a lantern-making workshop and enjoy complimentary mooncakes from Anna’s Cake House.

Manila-born singer Fajardo is a graduate of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in the U.K. and the University of Toronto’s opera performance program. She has performed as a solo recitalist and an opera artist across Europe, Canada, the U.K., and the Philippines. She currently serves as the education manager at Gateway and an artistic producer for Sound the Alarm: Music/Theatre.
