SUM gallery presents sticky extensions from October 13 to December 8

A MEDITATIVE DRAG performance will launch sticky extensions, Romi Kim’s SUM gallery exhibition debut. The show explores the artist’s relationships to community and place through video, installation, performance, workshops and play.

Kim, aka House of Rice drag artist SKIM, will be collaborating with visual artist and drag performer Romeo Villanueva III and Queer Based Media’s Chris Reed and Kendell Yan. Throughout its run, the exhibition will also feature performances by drag artists Dongganisa, Maiden China, and Continental Breakfast.
“Stickiness is tacky,” Kim says in an artist statement. “It attaches one’s body or object to another body or object, sensation and feeling. It can create emotions of annoyance, disgust and fascination. sticky extensions explores the concept of 情 정: an untranslatable word that expresses attachment, feelings of connection and warmness that provoke social reciprocity. 情 encourages being present in your actions in order to create understanding. It grows over time.”

Kim, who identifies as a genderfluid, second-generation Korean lesbian, has a BFA in visual arts and gender studies from the University of Victoria a MFA from UBC. They have performed in South Korea, Berlin, Scotland, and Vietnam, among other places.

Queer Based Media is a QTPOC multimedia production company that provides videography, photography, projection installation, and design work for queer creators. The company also has a digital venue on its website for mutual aid and social equity fundraisers, such as Rainbow Refugee, and Visible.
