The Vancouver Bach Family of Choirs is presenting the Canadian premiere of the chamber arrangement of Dame Ethel Smyth’s Mass in D major at the Orpheum on February 28 at 7:30 pm.
Members of Vancouver Opera’s Yulanda M. Faris Young Artists Program will perform the powerful piece alongside the Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestra and the Vancouver Bach Family of Choirs symphonic choir. They will also present the Canadian premiere of contemporary composer Kati Agócs’s Hosanna of the Clouds.
Smyth’s Mass was first performed in 1893 at Royal Albert Hall, and was not revived again in London until 1924. It debuted in the U.S. nearly six decades after that, in 1980, and premiered in Australia in 2022.
This concert, conducted by Leslie Dala, will feature solo performances from soprano Julia LoRusso, mezzo-soprano Marianne Bertrand, tenor Lyndon Ladeur, and bass-baritone Mihnea Nitu.
