Youths take the spotlight in Vancouver Chamber Choir’s Horizons, January 27
Up-and-coming talents are featured in mixed concert program
Vancouver Chamber Choir presents Horizons on January 27 at 7:30 pm at Pacific Spirit United Church; a pre-concert talk with artistic director Kari Turunen takes place at 7 pm
VANCOUVER CHAMBER CHOIR is spotlighting youth in its upcoming concert, Horizons.
The event features Focus, the organization’s post-secondary students’ choir, a yearly choral singing intensive for up-and-coming artists in college and university. Plus, Lord Byng Secondary School choir will also perform, conducted by its director of choral activities, Lisa Lan.
The Vancouver Chamber Choir and Focus will be performing the winning contributions of the company’s 2023 Young Composers’ Competition, which is now in its 16th year and judged in three age categories: elementary (ages eight to 12), secondary (ages 13 to 17), and college/university (ages 18 to 22). The pieces include elementary winner Jonathan Djakov, with “Laž”; secondary winner Henry Wang, with “I felt a Funeral, in my Brain”, and post-secondary winner Justin Torzala, with “The Days to Come”.
Also on the program is VCC’s performance of the world premiere of Time is by Tamsin Jones, associate lecturer at the International Centre for Music Studies at Newcastle University; Frank Martin’s Songs of Ariel; laura hawley’s O the snow!, Galina Grigorjeva’s “In paradisum”; and Tracy Wong’s “Rasa Nusantara”, among other works.
A pre-concert talk with VCC artistic director Kari Turunen happens at 7 pm.
