The Vancouver Latin American Cultural Centre (VLACC) has just announced the return of Latin Expressions, its annual festival marking Latin American Heritage Month throughout October. Now in its fourth year, Latin Expressions brings together artists, audiences, and communities through music, dance, theatre, film, literature, and visual arts.
This year’s festival features eight events across Vancouver that highlight the vitality and diversity of Latin American cultures. Programming will launch with an Opening Night Celebration on October 3 at St. James Community Square. Vancouver’s exciting Latin band Mazacote and DJ Diana Mulata will perform; the evening will also feature Latin American cocktails and Brazilian treats at the bar.
Among other festival highlights is the Vancouver premiere of “Vessels” at Emily Carr University of Art + Design’s Reliance Theatre on October 6. The short animated film by Cuban artist Yaimel López will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by art historian Miret Rodríguez.
A Community Milonga will take place on October 17 at the Vancouver Playhouse, presented in partnership with DanceHouse. The social evening of Argentine tango will be open to both trained dancers and folks of all other experience levels.

The world premiere of Electric Company Theatre’s Fire Never Dies: The Tina Modotti Project, a powerful new play by Carmen Aguirre, will be at The Cultch’s Historic Theatre from October 16 to 26. It explores the intersection of art and revolution through the life of Italian photographer and activist Tina Modotti.
In partnership with the Vancouver Writers Fest, a Latin American Short Stories Reading Group will happen on October 23 at the Dockside Lounge inside the Granville Island Hotel. The special event will feature Mexican-Canadian author Martha Bátiz in conversation about three of her powerful stories that explore migration, womanhood, identity, and resilience.
And on October 25, a Latin American Studio Hop in collaboration with the Eastside Arts Society and Curated Tastes will consist of an afternoon tour that showcases local Latin American visual artists Angie Jaimes, Pilar Mehlis, and Camila Pabón in their studios.
All Latin Expressions events are free or affordably priced and open to everyone. Full details and registration are available through VLACC.
