Arts Umbrella Dance Company returns to the Vancouver Playhouse this month for Tempus Fugit: A Midseason Performance, which explores the fleeting nature of time and the immediacy of live dance.
The artists will take the stage for Midseason on February 26 and 27 at 7:30 pm. Across two exhilarating performances, world-class repertoire and compelling new works will unfold as part of the vital, time-honoured process leading toward the company’s Season Finale.
Arts Umbrella’s dancers will perform thrilling and innovative choreography by leading Canadian and international artists, including Anne Jung, Lukas Timulak, Rebecca Margolick, Cyril Baldy, and more. “Tempus fugit” is Latin for “time flies”. As such, the works on the program all focus on seizing the present moment—where movement appears, transforms, and vanishes.
Originally from Germany, Jung began her movement training as a rhythmic gymnast, competing with the German national team at the 1996 Summer Olympics and in European and world championships. She later transitioned to dance, and has since been a member of the Dresden Frankfurt Dance Company and Nederlands Dans Theater.
Timulak is a Slovak choreographer and movement director who works across dance and film from his home base in the Netherlands. He performed with Nederlands Dans Theater for 10 seasons and has worked with such renowned choreographers as Jiří Kylián, William Forsythe, Ohad Naharin, and Crystal Pite.
Margolick is a Canadian-American dancer and choreographer whose choreography has been commissioned by Oregon Ballet Theatre, La Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica, Ballet BC Annex, and more. Formerly a member of Sidra Bell Dance New York, she has recently appeared on Vancouver stages in pieces like Company 605 and T.H.E Dance Company’s physically arresting Sloth Canon, and the intimate duet to begin with no end with Tushrik Fredericks at Dancing on the Edge.
Baldy is a French dance artist who spent nearly a decade performing with the Dresden Frankfurt Dance Company (then called The Forsythe Company), before taking on the role of choreographer, educator, rehearsal director, and stager for its eponymous founder.
Midseason is generously supported by The Parachute Fund. Tickets and more details are available through Arts Umbrella.
