DanceHouse presents the Vancouver premiere of Birdy, award-winning Taiwanese company Hung Dance’s striking interplay of freedom and restraint, at the Vancouver Playhouse on November 28 and 29 at 8 pm.
Birdy employs an exquisite headpiece called the “Ling Zi”, which incorporates four-foot-long pheasant tailfeathers and is worn in traditional Chinese opera to represent a warrior’s power and skill. Set to an eclectic mix of electronica and Chinese classical music, the piece traces a journey from tradition to modernity. As the dancers flock together in rippling patterns, what emerges is a universal cry for freedom against the weighted cage of history.
Founded in 2017 by choreographer Lai Hung-Chung, Hung Dance has a choreographic vocabulary drawn from martial arts, Peking opera, and traditional cultural symbols. Through the prism of performance, Taiwan’s complex history and political status transform into a thrilling new dance language.
Tickets to Birdy and more details are available through DanceHouse.
