Vancouver Civic Theatres launches Sunset Cinema: Free Outdoor Movie Screenings with Shrek on August 6 at dusk

SHREK IS ONE OF THOSE films that unites the masses—more than two decades after its release, people are still quoting it on the regular. What’s not to love about a foul-mouthed ogre who’s secretly a softie, or a talking donkey with a heart of gold?

The animated fave is kicking off Vancouver Civic Theatres’ annual outdoor Sunset Cinema series, which will take place at šxʷƛ̓exən Xwtl’a7shn (the plaza outside the Queen Elizabeth Theatre). Pre-show entertainment by local DJs MangoSweet begins at 7 pm, with screenings starting at dusk, or approximately 9 pm.

Released in 2001 by DreamWorks, Shrek centres on the titular ogre, who lives alone in a faraway swamp—which is suddenly overrun by an unwelcome throng of fairy-tale characters when they’re exiled from the city-state of Duloc by its pompous ruler, Lord Farquaad. To regain his cherished solitude, Shrek must embark on a mission to rescue Farquaad’s bride-to-be, Princess Fiona, who’s being held captive by Dragon. Along the way, we’re introduced to beloved characters such as Shrek’s trusted sidekick Donkey and the small but feisty Gingerbread Man, better known as Gingy.

Shrek’s pop-culture impact has been immeasurable. Most Gen Zers can’t hear Smash Mouth’s “All Star” without thinking of the film’s opening credits. Clubs around North America regularly host Shrek-themed raves, with attendees dressed in extravagant ogre outfits—think bald caps, brown vests, and green face paint galore. Shrek even has his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in L.A., which was unveiled in 2010 with a speech by Mike Myers.

The upcoming Vancouver Civic Theatres screening is free, and attendees are encouraged to bring blankets, chairs, and pillows to sit on. There will be a Shrek-themed selfie station and a Lime scooter pop-up onsite before the film starts.

Other titles in store during the Sunset Cinema series this month include The Wild Robot on August 13, Raiders of the Lost Ark on August 20, and Mean Girls on August 27.
