Ballet BC presents DUSK, the 2024-25 season finale, at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre from May 8 to 10 at 8 pm. A new creation from sought-after choreographic duo Bobbi Jene Smith and Or Schraiber, a remount of Marco Goecke’s acclaimed work Woke Up Blind, and a world premiere from artistic director Medhi Walerski are all in store for audiences.
Alumni of Batsheva Dance Company, founding members of the American Modern Opera Company, and current artists in residence with LA Dance Project, Smith and Schraiber—partners inside and outside the studio—will premiere Obsidian, their first work for Ballet BC. The duo is known for reflecting everyday experiences through intense, unexpected, and uniquely expressive creations, and for collaborations within the world of cinema. Smith and Schraiber have been commissioned by some of the world’s finest companies, including the Paris Opera Ballet, Martha Graham Dance Company, Royal Danish Ballet, and Theater Basel.
Goecke’s Woke Up Blind, meanwhile, will return to the Ballet BC stage. This stirring and evocative exploration of love, longing, and loss is a notable creation within the illustrious German choreographer’s monumental 60-work canon. Seven dancers inhabit Goecke’s pure, ultra-distinct style, moving through a world of intense sound highlighted by the singular guitar licks and the haunting vocals of storied late American musician Jeff Buckley. Woke Up Blind is a vital work of contemporary dance that will leave audiences wanting more.
Continuing his remarkable and prolific creative journey with Ballet BC, French choreographer Walerski will add an anticipated work to the company’s growing repertoire—his seventh world premiere created in Vancouver, shared first with Ballet BC audiences. Known for a movement language that embodies the essence of the human spirit through intimate partnering and dynamic group work, his pieces are powerful and riveting, demanding viewers’ full attention.
Heather Myers, Ballet BC’s manager of education and engagement, will host the related multidisciplinary workshop Creative Immersion: DUSK on May 5 from 6 pm to 8 pm. The workshop is open to all ages and experience levels. As spots are limited, advance registration is required.
