VANCOUVER-BASED FLAMENCO SINGER Jafelin has brought in the band Flor de Caña for a concert that fuses Cuban, Spanish ,and flamenco rhythms.
The ensemble features six musicians, on everything from upright bass to horns to guitars to bongo and clave—all experts in traditional Cuban son and Colombian-born cumbia.
What makes this show unique is the way those influences from the south intermingle with the cante of traditional Spanish flamenco. Jafelin was born in Ciudad Bolivar, Venezuela, a country immersed in Spanish influences. But Jafelin’s passion for flamenco only bloomed upon coming to Canada in 1996, where she took dance lessons in the art form—eventually beecoming both a bailaora (dancer) and cantaora (singer).
From there, in her music, she’s drawn in influences ike latin jazz and boleros.
In other words, the show promises to serve up a cultural mix that's been steeped in centuries of history, across oceans—and should bring a little heat to the autumn chill.
